With the winter is approaching in Beijing and temperatures going below zero, are you prepared yet for coldest days of the year? If not, you should visit the Down Wear Section on the 4th floor of Xidan Department Store. Down, the most insulated layer of bird feathers, provide great protection against the cold while staying light and thin. And the Xidan Department Store has all the famous brands.
When I reached the 4th floor, down garments of all varieties were literally everywhere. This makes sense, as it is the end of October. While there are many to choose from, the floor is separated by brands. The famous brands include Bosideng, Snow Flying, Ya Ya, and Sharon. Bosideng is the most famous as their down wears has many technological elements such as germproof, fungusproof, mothproof and odourproof. Prices for Bosiden down wears range from RMB 349 to RMB 788. Other brands like Hansi are a bit cheaper.
Another great little “winter accessory” you’ll find at almost any market or even street corner, are packs of woolly in-soles (鞋垫). These come in a variety of types and sizes such as lamb wool, rabbit hair etc. They should cost you no more than 1 RMB and are a really cosy addition to your footwear.

From about November onwards, virtually every Beijing local buys themselves a pair of “qiu ku” (秋裤, literally meaning “Autumn pants”). These are essentially a pair of long johns for both him and her, and can be bought with a matching top for under your clothes. You’ll find these in any major Chinese supermarket such as Carrefour, and they’ll set you back anything from around 100-300 RMB. These are an essential part of winter life in Beijing, and you’ll be much, much colder happier with them on!
